Sorry if this is obvious, but I always thought the media bay was where the DVD drive sat.
What is the type of 1.8" drive required and what's the method for installing? Can I purchase what I need from Dell to get a second hard drive in my E6500?
the E6500 has a 2,5 " hdd. the article from newmodeus.com shows a hdd with caddy for the normal hdd. Dell has a second hdd for the mediabay, that is onloy 1,8". Poorly one that has slow data transfer.
newmodeus will show a second hdd caddy for the optical bay at end of april
as an alternative you can use the second hdd caddy of lenovos T400/t500. You can get it for around 20 bucks at ebay. the only negative is, that is has no button to release it.

I have read all the E6500 documentation. The only reference to a second hard drive is here;
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/late6500/en/sqrg/pdf/U084C0MR.pdf
Here is the text:
Second hard drive - in media bay (optional)
