Latitude XT Tablet

Neither the button to rotate my screen nor the Dell Quickset keys rotates my screen?  Sounds as if you got further than I have.  Any thoughts?

 

I can't seem to find any help beyond a message that keeps telling me:

 

  The setting you requested cannot be supported

  Open Display in Control Panel, adjust the settings, and then try to change orientation again.

 

I've been through the Display choices over-and-over and perhaps it is right there but I can't find it.

 

 

Are you using Win XP SP3?  If you are, you need to download the most recent ATI Radeon graphics display driver for your XT Tablet.  The one from 4/2008 will correct the "screen rotation by pressing the button" problem.  I still haven't figured out the "Auto-rotation" problem though.

The machine is brand new from Dell, is running SP3 and I had assumed it had all the latest patches from Microsoft.  I decided to check, and was surprised to find that there were 21 patches (16 high priority by the way).  I went and installed those, and the very last one was the ATI one and as it was being installed I was thinking - I bet this might be the one that does the job.

 

By that point I had already removed Dell's Quickset and had to reinstall that as that appeared a likely candidate so I did that as well, but I agree with you that I suspect it is the ATI patch that did the trick.

 

With regard to the Autorotation - do you mean when you open the machine it is in landscape and when you go to tablet it doesn't rotate to Portrait?  Mine now does that as well.  In my research yesterday I did see a setting (press the Wrench button on the tablet I believe) where you turn that on.  Have you gone down that path yet?

Auto rotation did not work before applying any of the patches.

 

I used the Microsoft "Windows Update" command on the Start menu.  I first allowed it to only find the critical patches (16 of them as I recall) and I installed those.  After those I had the machine in a bit of limbo as I had removed Dell QuickSet and could not get it reinstalled.  The next thing I did was go back to "Windows Update" and there were no more critical patches, but there were 5 optional ones - like 2 hardware and 3 software or vice versa.  I installed these.  The very last one was an update to the ATI driver which caught my eye as I suspected it might be a likely winner.

 

I then installed Dell QuickSet from Dell's website.  Be careful to select the right OS.  I am running XP, and this website kept trying to set the OS version to Vista - and that resulted in some failed attempts at installation.

 

After the Windows patches and the reinstall of Dell QuickSet I can now change the orientation and auto orientation works - in fact I just checked it right this minute and it worked fine.

Did the Auto-Rotation work before you did the updates?  And which update did you apply; just from Windows update website, or did you go to Dell's website?

Bill: I have updated my XT to where there aren't any more updates.  Still can't get Auto-Rotate to work.  Maybe someone from Dell monitoring this can offer a suggestion for me.

I figured out what the problem was.  After noting you mentioned Quickset, and using the Chat feature on support.dell.com with a tech, I found out that Dell Quickset must be loaded and running in the background for the Auto-Rotate feature to work; just having the settings correct is not enough.

Great to hear!  Congratulations.

 

I'm having two additional issues - in case you have run into them:

 

1) When my "slice" battery is attached the machine's display doesn't come on during the boot process.  The extra battery has to be off during the boot and I can then add the battery.

 

2) Performance - periodically (and pretty regularly) simply hangs with even when the Task Manager reports exceedingly low CPU utilization.

Can you please explain it briefly; I could not know how can I make quick set to be run in background it’s already on the start up (from msconfig), and it exists on taskbar tray, but still the rotation button is not working, and it gives same message :

 

“The setting you requested cannot be supported.

Please HELP

Look up the driver for the tablet XT, click on previous versions. Use this driver, it is for a tablet, the other drivers are just for a laptop
