Logic Board

Hey, I have a lattitude c640, and Ive been having what I thought was problems with RAM modules, but after testing each one individually, they both seem to work, however, whether or the thing starts up is still hit and miss, reguardless of what combination I put the RAM modules in. My friend who does Mac repairs has had this problem in macs, and seemed to solve it by replacing the logic board. Would this be the same in a Dell? And if you have time, why would the logic board effect startup?
Thanks

Hi,

Have you run mem. diags ? The most common problem is the mem, but you can have socket problems also. Try the Diags with 1 mem in each socket at a time, and maybe clean the contacts with alcohol. As the sockets are part of the Mbd, if the Mem isnt faulty, you will need the Mbd to be replaced.

Thing is, I just got my mobo replaced a month ago. I suppose I could have blown it again, but it seems unlikely. Thanks for the tip on cleaning.

Question: How do I know which RAM module is bad? They both got the computer up and running, but shortly afterwards, the thing froze again.

Hi,

Run the Diags or computer with only 1 ram, till it fails / then the other. You should find the bad one by doing this. You can do the same with the slots in the motherboard. It will boot and run with the 2nd only installed.

Thanks. Unfortunatly, that has recently become a non-option, as my computer wont start up at all any more.

I guess this means a new motherboard for me huh?

Thanks again
