Loose network card

Question

The network card in my Inspiron 5100 is probably a bit loose - I often loose the connection, and if I shake the computer a little when that happens I generally get the connection back. Is it possible (doable) to open up the case and fix this issue? Does anyone have experience with doing something like this? My warranty is over and I'd rather not miss my laptop getting it repaired at dell (what I've heard it often takes some time before you have your computer back).

If the onboard NIC is unreliable, install a $20-30 PCMCIA NIC. The only way to fix the onboard one is to replace the system board, which is a $500 part.

OK thank you. I'm thinking of selling my laptop (to by a workstation) so I thought it would be nice to fix it before selling, but obviously that's not an option. Sam

Have you tried just wiggling The cable in the RJ45 socket??? That is more than likely the problem NOT the on board NIC controller. Or it coulde the connector for the socket on the motherboard is loose. You can replace the socket, I believe, and or take the notebook a part and reseat the plug on the motherboard. At least you can on other models.
