low audio while watching DVDs

I have a new i1000 purchased in Dec 04, for some reason the audio is very low while playing and watching DVDs, with games I have great sound and also using headphones while watching DVDs. Any solutions to this I did see and add for a Creative Labs sound card pcimia compatable.

Ok i downloaded and installed the patch, didn't seem to help much.

Steve, I have a 5100 which is very similar and has the same sound board.  The sound can be very soft at times -- it's DVD specific.  Things you can try:
 
1) max out both the "volume control" and "wave" level in volume control.
 
2) check your dvd player -- most have options to increase the sound volume.
 
3) the real solution is to buy external speakers or even good headphones -- external amplification solves most of the problems and makes the movies sound great.  note that if you want more than 2 channel sound you will need an external soundcard (usb2 or cardbus)

Thanks for the info NemesisDB, i did read about a external cardbus for Creative Labs.

I do use my laptop mostly at work to watch movies, and because of my nature of work I can't use headphones. But I will try your suggestions and see what happens:manvery-happy:

hey ive noticed that on the i 1150 and i cant be trying while in a van trying to calm down two kids have speakers connected every time any suggestions on how to fix my problem cause i have to use the laptop for work as well as to keep kids quiet and i would prefer the sound come directly out of the internal speakers any suggestions would be nice. i have also contacted tech support and they said it was the decoding software. ive gotten to the point that i believe that its digital output that it cant read.

Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum.

My only suggestion on this would be to use externally powered speakers and turn up their gain.

heres what i have done so far to troubleshoot it my self i have uninstalled the dvd software and reinstalled it and i have also turned up everything to the highest and i have even reinstalled my operating system for this issue and its still there.

i have tried that and the external ones sound fine i just hate always having to use them while playing dvds. is there a permanent fix on this issue cause i do dell tech support and im curious about this.

do other sounds play loud enough for you?  if nothing plays loud, then no, there is no fix.  if other stuff plays loud, check around in your decoder software and see if there is a way you can amplify the volume there.

is there any solution or does dell just not care about the end user cause i have called tech support for this and they dont have a solution either. nothing meant by this dell but i think that dell has some serious issues with the audio on the laptops esp. inspiron you can do it up great for your businesses but not the home users so dell IMPROVE OR LOSE THE CUSTOMERS. im serious dell and i hate to say it.

Did you ever answer the question of whether or not the sound is only “low” on DVD playback?

If it is only on DVD, then again, I would suggest that you use external speakers…
I have this exact problem with my expensive home DVD player (that connects to my TV) and my 5.1 setup…it is just the nature of DVD that the audio may be lower sometimes.

you know corey i have questioned that but it seem to me that when compaq can do it and dell cant that something must be wrong.

for the love of god pet, answer the questions we ask:

1) on your dell, is the sound always low or just low with certains DVDs? is the sound low with mp3s or wavs?

2) are the compaq and the dell using the same decoder?  if not, try switching...  intervideo6 works amazingly well if you want to buy it -- not sure if it will solve your audio problems are not though

the volume is always low with dvds doesnt matter what kind it is and i havent tried with mp3s or wavs (and i dont know what you are talking about with mp3s and wavs.)
