LPT1 Port

Question

I have been having trouble with the printer port on my Inspiron 8100. I can't get my HP Deskjet printer to print and, using Laplink, I can't communicate with LPT1. The printer works with my old laptop, another Dell Inspiron. I have deleted and reinstalled both the printer and the port, using the hardware device manager.

Any ideas on how to proceed?

Make sure the Parallel Mode in the BIOS is ECP. Also, make sure the printer cable is certified bidirectional.

John, Thanks for the reply. I checked, and the port is in 'ECP' mode. The cables I used were bi-directionaland were the same ones I used successfully with my old computer. Jerry

Hhmmm. That certainly makes the cheese more binding! Have you gone to the HP site and downloaded their latest drivers for your particular printer? Other than that, I'm tapped out.

Has anyone found the fix for this? The knowledge base describes the problem in detail and says the NVRAM needs to be cleared. Unfortunately it also says it can't be done to an inspirion. I've tried everything I can think of (including playing with the setting in the bios) except fomatting the hard drive and starting over (last resort). I have an Inspiron 8500 with an HP 722C attached to it.
