I have tried a few third party fan speed programs but none so far have detected the fans in the M6700.

Updating the BIOS could also help in fixing the problem. To update the BIOS please follow the below mentioned steps:

1. Visit the following website: http://dell.to/QjjZDA
2. Enter the Service tag of the computer in the box provided and click “Submit”.
3. In the next page, click drop down arrow to select the Operating System which is installed in the computer.
4. Under category BIOS, click “Get driver” and save the file on desktop.
5. Ensure to connect the AC Adapter to the computer, run the BIOS file.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions to update the BIOS.
7. Restart the computer when prompted.

Check the functionality of the system fans and reply.

Unfortunately, Dell has not yet bothered to update the BIOS for this machine to fix the fan control routines.  I have an m6700 that is not really overheating, but it is driving me up a wall with the fans coming on full blast for 30 seconds at a time and then turning off again. They're not blocked.  They're not dusty. And there's nothing running the CPU or the GPU hard enough to explain the On/Off/On/Off/On/Off nonsense.

I have also tried several 3rd party fan control applications (speedfan, etc.) but they do not detect the fans in the m6700 so they are of no use.  I would like to have the ability to change the temperature thresholds for fan speed so that I don't have to listen to this stupid thing trying to blow itself off the desktop every 5 minutes.  It would be better for my nerves and the lifespan of the fans if they would just run at low speed all the time.

I've had this issue with Dell laptops in the past but ended up finding a way to make those tolerable.  If Dell doesn't publish a fix for the m6700 fan speed stupidity pretty soon, I'll have to find some other laptop manufacturer next time.  There was once a time when a dell machine was worth the bit of extra cost.  Seems like they've decided to milk money out of anyone who hasn't discovered that the machines they sell now are no better than their competitors... and are probably getting worse.

C'mon Dell, get this boneheaded fan control issue fixed for us on the m6700.  If you're too cheap to fix it yourselves, at least send Alfredo Comparetti (author of speedfan) some $$ to encourage him to add support for the fan controllers in your proprietary, over-customized BIOS and help your customers work around it.

Found this blog post that offers a possible solution to the on off on off on off thing.  Tried it and it does seem to keep the fans off for a longer period and when they come on, they stay on an intermediate speed (still reasonably quiet) for a much longer time.  I don't know if this might help the overall over-heating issue, but it might, since it appears to let the GPU run normally without micro-manipulating the fans.
