mini 10v standby USB power

Hello all,

I got a new Inspiron mini 10v (1011) the other day, it has Windows XP on it. One thing I want to know is, does anyone know how to adjust the settings so that when the netbook goes into standby mode the USB ports remain powered? It'd be nice to be able to keep my phone topped up off the netbooks battery.

I've seen this working with the same hardware running OSX (I know that's naughty but anyway) so why isn't it working for me? I always thought it was a feature of the hardware to leave USB ports on or off but I guess not, is this an XP setting I can change?

Thanks!

wizpip,

Just leave the computer on but lock it.

wizpip,

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)

Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.

Go to each USB Root Hub and right click on it, left click properties, left click power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Restart your computer.

Thanks Rick,

I tried that earlier, and again just now to check. Unfortunately, it doesn't stop the USB power being cut off from all three ports. :emotion-6:

No no no no, I mean that, the battery will run down faster as the netbook is on and charging my phone, rather than just on standby and charging my phone. It seems I'll just have to keep the laptop on at the expense of battery life, so I can keep my phone topped up.

wizpip,

The take the battery out. The computer will work without the battery installed. Just remember to shutdown the computer or attach the battery before removing the power cord.

My iPhone whilst using GPS and 3G for mapping purposes manages to drain the battery fully in about 3 hours. Which is obviously not very helpful if I'm out and about using maps a lot :-D

wizpip,

I understand. I have a cigarette lighter adapter for my cell phone. My wife than had me purchase an adapter that plugs into the cigarette lighter adapter and you can plug your 110 charger into it. It really does come in handy and you don't have to keep buying adapters. Got it at Walmart.

12V DC to 110V AC Power Inverters just to give you an idea of what I have.

wizpip,

It's not good to charge your phone all the time. I chanrge my cell phone when I get the low battery warning. Depending on the usage it's almost every 5 days. When you charge your phone everyday, you trained the battery that it needs charde often. Best to wait until you get the low battery warning to charge it.

Those things are great, but they're not going to help me when I'm out and about in London and the only form of transport I have is a cramped tube!
