New C400 Bios kills CPU Fan?

Question

I had many problems with the screen flashing white randomly after I turned on the system, and after 2 flex cables and a new inverter, I have traced the problem to overheating. The reason for this overheating seems to be a CPU fan that ceases to work.

I poked around with a voltmeter and have discovered that the fan header on the motherboard does not work, but the fan works when I wire it to the battery. Was there a bios fix that somehow shut off the fan header? Is there any way to keep the fan running all the time without hard wiring it to the HDD power or another power source?

I would be very happy if someone could answer my question, cause dell tech support changed operators on me 3 times yesterday and then disconnected me... :(

I don't want you to do anything to your Dell that will harm it. It would be better to find out and correct the fan issue.

However, there is a utility that allows some modification to your fan speeds (and turning it on). You could read about it at http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html should you decide to ignore my "gotcha" above.

Interestingly, the fan turns on with that program, and I played worms armageddon for about half an hour and everything was perfect. I turned it off, then later I turned it back on and about 15 minutes later it started to flicker and turn white again. I have no idea what the problem is now...

Hi,

The fan comes on as needed, and may not be turning on in your machine. You can get a Mbd for about $220 from parts-people. I have seen a few C600's that the fan works with Diags, but never turns on when it should.
