received my D800 last 11/11, no issue with the keyboard... just perfect for me ! no issue with the screen.. just one word : perfect ! and one advice : never buy a brand new model .. justt wait for it maturation !
Hey, Famous. I got my machine around the time you and images got yours. I posted a lot about the keyboard at the time, cos it was so amazingly súcky. I called and complained a few times, and actually they were very good about replacing it. The keyboard itself is a CRU (customer replaceable unit), and they sent me a couple of new ones. They were no good either, but there you go. Then it turned out that the real issue was not with the keyboard, but with the palm-rest that surrounds and fails to support it. So I complained some more and they sent an engineer out to replace the palm-rest. After removing about one million screws, he replaced my original palm-rest with an absolutely identical (reconditioned) one. Needless to say, that also achieved nothing. Eventually Dell reported that they had redesigned the palm rest and I requested another replacement. They were happy to send a guy out, but when I saw what he'd brought with him, I decided against waiting an hour for him to remove all those little screws - the "redesgined" palm rest was just the original palm rest with a couple of yellow foam strips stuck to it. Dell had done nothing more than to copy the "foam fix" originally posted by a user on this message board (though they'd put the foam strips in the wrong places).
In the end I did the foam fix properly myself, and the keyboard has been serviceable since then. I wouldn't say great, but fine. Short answer though is, if they've really fixed the problem, phone 'em and complain - they replaced mine four times, they should be happy to do yours once. Having said that, my replacements were all in the couple of months after I bought the machine, so perhaps they were more eager to please at that stage. Another caveat - even at the time, there were plenty of people who claimed that their keyboard was just fine. I don't believe a word of it - some people just have lower expectations of their hardware, or different preferences for how it should feel. I would not therefore be sure that the keyboard issue has been fixed until I hear from somebody who had and hated the original board and has since had the problem fixed.
Famous, you could be that person! Get them to replace your palm-rest and let us know whether they've done the job.
