New laptop
I recently purchased a 2nd hand laptop on Ebay and when I installed my win98 o/s and noticed that my display is 16 colours instead of 256. I was advised to install the video drivers but when I previously tried to install my broadband to download these I was asked to install a new modem! Can anyone assist me?

Download the driver from the Dell site you are posting this message from and burn them to a CD-R disk then install the drivers needed form that CD-R. If you are going to have more than 1 PC on your BB connection please BUY a router to share the connection and do NOT install any of your ISPs software on any of the PCs. If you woul;d like more help in this area please go to
http://www.dslreports.com and look at the forums for your ISP and the type/brand of router/Gateway you are looking to buy. Also look throgh the FAQs at that site for more info.

Hi Ed,
Forget the start of my last reply. I'm a novice with computers, but I now have 256 colours on my laptop - thanks for your help. I still have one question however, when i try to install broadband my laptop is asking me to install a PCMCIA modem card. Does this mean I do not have a modem installed? And if not, does anyone know how much they are?

When you say "Install BroadBand" there is no software needed to connect to a broadband DSL or cable connection. Most all of them use a ethernet modem and all you have to do is connect from the Ethernet port on your notebook to the Ethernet port on the modem. That is IF the modem you have is also a router and it also has a ethernet port on it and NOT just USB. A Ethernet port/jack looks like a BIG phone port/jack.
If you go to that site I posted a link to and look for your ISP and the FAQs for that ISP you should find all the info needed to use your BB connection WITHOUT having to install any software on your notebook or any other PC.
