no wireless networks found in range...

I was so excited when I picked up my Inspiron 640m that I tore it out of it's box while still parked in my car.

I powered it up and watched as the wireless management software showed me 5 wireless networks available in the area!

Fantastic!

I played around a bit more before I decided I'd better get back to work.

I then powered the lapper down and a window flashed up and said something about saving power by turning off the wireless adapter? Maybe? I honestly didn't have time to see what it actually said because it popped up and disappeared so fast.

Since then (the day I got it) I have not been able to connect to any wireless networks, and I have tried in several places that have them.

What do I need to do to get hooked up to a wireless network?

Go to a Starbucks or some other place that offers free wireless service.

Turn on your "lapper" and give it time (wait a full minute after windows boots to your desktop) to find a hotspot.

If you are unsuccessful, ask another Starbucks customer who has a lapper open and working.

great, except i've done that and it still doesn't see any networks.

it says "make sure your wifi is switched on".

the fn+f2 does nothing.

wifi is enabled in the bios.

Download the latest driver for your notebook. Although your notebook is brand new, it may still need the latest and greatest driver for your model. Click the Technical support tab at the top of this page and follow instructions.
Two icons should appear in the lower right side of your screen. One should be a small bar graph showing the strength of your connection. Hover over it with your mouse pointer.
Another icon is a small computer with the symbol )) near it. Experiment with these icons by single clicking them, then right clicking them and general messing with them.

If you see no icons, call Dell.

I had the same problem! (I've had a lot of problems with my 2200)

I ended up having to do a system restore to the earliest date I could...it was only a few months ago but it worked. System restore is a good thing...you don't lose any  personal files.
