Notebook System Software does not work with 8500 and Win2000?
I am trying to install Win2000 on an Inspiron 8500. The OS installed fine, along with most of the drivers. I can't get the Notebook System Software (version A07 or any previous versions) to install. I get the message "Setup cannot run on this machine." The System Software is required for the floppy drive to work - very important in my case.
The documentation for the System Software indicates that is will work in this configuration - but it doesn't. I'm using a retail copy of Win2000, not a Dell OEM copy. I suspect the System Software setup is looking for sometype of registry setting that indicates what type of machine it is, can't find it, so it decides it can't run.
Does anyone have any ideas how to get around this? I found a previous post related to this issue but no solution was posted. If it is a registry setting, please post it.

I think it has to do with what OS service pack is on your PC. I've run into the same issue with an 8600 and Dell won't help because it was not the OS shipped with the machine.

I originally tried to install it without any service packs, and thought that might be the problem. I installed SP4 and tried again, but still have the issue.
It's too bad Dell isn't willing to step up to the plate on this. They publish that Win2000 is supported by this software, but don't seem to care that it doesn't work. Over the last year or two I've noticed Dell support has gotten progressively worse. This is just another example of it.
