Numeric Keypad on Vostro 3550
I have just received a Vostro 3550. Everythng OK until I came to look for a numeric keypad. Normamly on laptops, Ihave not had a separate numeric keypad, but used the overlaid one via the fn key, but that facility seems to be missing. I'm not worried about the lack of a numeric keypad function as such, but I would like to be able to use the Alt+nnn facility to generate extra characters such as é. Anyone know if this is this possible?

I haven't found a general solution, but since I use Word for the majority of my editing, I have stumbled across the short cut keys that allow you to get the same effect, actually more neatly. You can find them at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/keyboard-shortcuts-for-international-characters-HP005186562.aspx. For anybody who is old enough to have used the DEC systems, they introduced an OS wide facility of a similar nature using a special compose key (as opposed to function, windows, alt, control keys etc).

I just received the Vostro 3460 and I'm experiencing the same issue.
Bloody hell ... Why did the design gurus at Dell get rid of the numeric keypad on the laptop keyboard? Grrrrr! Called into Dell Support to ask about a work around or fix or software to add the keypad back onto the laptop and the only resolution they can suggest is buying a USB keypad extension.
Just soured my new purchase experience.

Try AutoHotkey
the code is simple - not perfect - but does the job for me.
Regarding new software installations - always create a system restore point.

I have a vostro 3460 with qwerty keyboard, but I live in France. Ascii symbols using alt+number are necessary (eg. e acute is alt+130), but the vostro lacks a built in number pad. I'm worried that if I buy any usb connected number pad that this may not work with the alt key on the vostro keypad. Does anybody have any experience of this?
I have looked at AutoHotKey and frankly, I got lost pretty quickly. I just want a simple solution and having to use an external number pad is not a problem for me.
