backspace,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

The numeric keypad can be toggled using the [Number Lock] key.  With the key on, the letters on the right side of the keyboard will map to numbers.  When this is off, the keyboard should function normally.

Bob...okay, let's see if I understand you correctly....once the " Num Lock" is on, I should be able to use the numeric keypad without holding down the " Fn" key, right?  If that is correct, I have to update my BIOS to correct this?  My next question is why wasn't this correct before shipment?  I just got this laptop yesterday....Pls advise....how do you reset or update the BIOS?

backspace,

There is no way that I know of to lock the [Fn] key into either an "on" or "off" position.  Like I mentioned before, make sure that the [Num Lock] key is turned off when you are typing.  Try to update or reset the system BIOS to fix this issue.

Well, it take two calls and two hours later to have this fix....Chris (tech support) went thro. some BIOS setting..he couldn't get it fix...he suggest that I update my BIOS to A09.  Upgrade the BIOS did'nt help.  Second call answered by Nina...after about fifteen minutes, she got it fix with making a in the BIOS setting.  I also had some problem with the Norton Antivirus..it wouldn't load after startup....I just uninstall it and reinstall my own version......This is the 7th Dell purchase from me..it might be the last if this thing act up again.  Cheers to all!

You said that you have a fix for this problem. What is this fix ? (cause i would like to play Civ 3 with the num. keypad to move my units)

It seems to be a parameter in the bios but which one ?

Thank you ;)

Homer2,

Get into your BIOS by hitting F2 when you power up your laptop (when you see the Dell name).  Go to page 4 by hitting Alt & P until you get there ( Basic Device Config) and make sure the following are selected:

NUM LOCK: Enable

ENABLE KEYPAD: By Numlock

Once this is done, you should be able to hit the Num Lk key and use your numeric keypad.  Good luck!

Problem still exists, but with your help I have been able to correct the problem in with F2 at startup and in POST numeric keypad and not Function key it works.  Thanks
