Nvidia 8400M GS
The check tells me that Nvidia is working well, but it keeps crashing and I am told there is no updated driver. how is thispossible?

Which check did you do?
How does the computer crash?
Do you see strange lines/patterns on your screen?
Which model is your laptop?
The Nvidia 8400 is in a defective series of GPU's and alot of them fail due to overheating and cause irregular failures once they have been damaged, so that could be your problem, but then you should sometimes see graphics glitches during these crashes.
Did you use the drivers from dell or the ones from Microsoft update or from Nvidia website?
I suggest you use the ones from Dell and also update to the latest BIOS version for you laptop from Dell.
