nVidia NVS 135m problem on D830 - NOT the normal... odd issue

I just upgraded my Lat D830 to x64 Vista.  Laptop has the dreaded nVidia NVS 135M chipset. (128MB version, 4 GB of RAM)

The issue is that now, I don't have any choice about my Color Quality for the build in LCD.  The ONLY option is 16-bit.  Doesn't matter what resolution I choose, only 16-bit.  But when I use an external flat panel for dual panes, the EXTERNAL can go up to 32-bit color.

I've used the latest driver from Dell 179.24 (01/08/09, which is REALLY odd, since 179.31 came out last year... did they roll back?), I've checked the nVidia site for a new driver, which of course, referred me back to Dell (and wouldn't apply, anyways, I tried).  Upgraded BIOS and Chipset drivers.  Spent 30 minutes on hold with Dell support to be told that since x64 wasn't the original configuration of my laptop, they can't help me.  Never mind that my company got the x64 upgrade FROM Dell... or that they offerd the D830 with x64 Vista. (Isn't that part of being a licensed OEM, that you HAVE to support the product?)

Any thoughts, since the 18 months of "Pro Support " I have is appearantly useless?

Yep, Device Manager is happy, I have the nVidia control panel when I right-click desktop or can access it through the Display Properties dialog... Everything looks good...

It sees the internal LCD as a "Generic PnP Monitor on nVidia..." which seems odd, but I can't recall if that's normal behavior or not.  :-\

No real PROBLEMS, so I don't think it's related to the GPU issue most people are having (no huge black chunks, or archiving or clipping, etc), but it'd be really nice to have full functionality and 32-bit graphics)

Dell is correct about the OS support this has been standard for years. You change the OS you will lose support unless you return it back to as shipped OS. Makes no difference if you got the x64 from dell or not.

Have you looked in device manager to see if there are any ! or X next to devices?

Any other ideas or thoughts?  having to run in 16-Bit color and not having Aero is kind of a pain...
