problems with gforce 2go, dell 8100
i am looking for the postings i read long ago about folks who had probs with the gforce 2go, and dell 8100's..
anyone have any info on that?
my driver CONTINUOUSLy crashes, i have had the video card replaced, the motherboard replaced, reformatted the HD and reinstalled all of my software, i have tried all versions of the driver, from microsoft updates, dell, nvidia direct, even the mods.
when it crashes, it will start turning the screen into hiroglyphic (sp) like text, or like it is melting. you can move the mouse, but it is so slow, then it halts to a freeze. the only thing left to do is hard shut down.
it USED to come back with MS saying that a serious error has occrurred, and that it was caused by the graphics driver or display.
now it doesnt come up with anything.
dell, after me calling them forever, said to run a hard drive diagnostic, which i did, and it passed. and now they want to switch out the hard drive, which i do not find acceptable...it is not a hard drive issue.
any words of advice?

Hi,
Just curious, are you running the most recent BIOS for your system? If so, and you have tried all suggested methods from this forum and Dell, then I suggest you calling dell and asking for a new system. I'd be thinking I bought a lemon from them.
Good luck,
John

I've done the rant a few times. In between my last post I called tech-support again and now they say its the ram! I know I'm getting a whole new computer out of this but is it really worth the 2 or 3 months, alot of yelling just to make the computer work. Their sending me new ram tom. I'll let you know how it goes.

I am in the exact same situation as most. I had my hdd, motherboard, CPU replaced been through dozens of drivers from multiple sources, reinstalled my system a half dozen times and still freezes.
Tech- support is a joke! They have about as much of an idea as we do as the sause of the problem.
Does anyone else get a weird red line at the bottom?
Can anyone HELP?

I get the same red line you mention. Kind of a jagged edge to it, right? This occurs appears along with the problem the first poster described, with the text getting garbled and the computer slowing to a crawl. Usually can only jab the power button and restart when this happens.
The problem used to happen more frequently. I can't say for sure but it seemed to occur less after I got newer video drivers (for the geforce2 go) from Dell. This isn't a scientific conclusion though, it might just be my perception, like when your car seem to run better after you wash it :)
I agree, tech support is... lacking (the forum rejected my original adjective :), it's really gone down hill (I've owned Dells exclusively for five years). I'm currently trying to solve another video problem and so far the first tech call yielded an email with broken links, the second an email with links to outdated drivers. The third went to ask someone else for advice and accidently (?) hung up on me after an hour on the phone. The fourth simply had no solution, and it didn't help that the phone connection to India (!) made it almost impossible for him to understand me.
Sorry for the rant, but there's no "customer feedback" link I can find. Which is in itself another rant.

I have a similar problem with an 8100 - even Microsoft doesn't have a fix, nvidea says it must not be their fault. Mine reverts to a screen size of about 2 inches by 3 inches, and the colors go to about 16. Tess me it has a problem, and to please reboot. After reboot, it says serious error occurred and to email MS.
Anyone also have problem with MS Media player 9.0? Mine won't now recognize my cdrw/dvd drive to burn cds. Roxio will, but not media player. worked fine with Media player 8, but I can't restore, 9.0 is too integrated.

I've had and am having the exact same problem. Ironically, it only began after I installed the latest BIOS and video card drivers in order to correct another problem (freeze on suspend).
It's obvious that the problem resides with the video card and it's integration with the computer. It's also obvious that it is not a priority to fix, and that it likely won't be fixed -- or that the fix is too extensive and expensive to implement for warrantied customers. (If a tech ever suggests that you replace your hard disk in order to fix what is obviously a video card problem, hang up, call back, and find someone who is not retarded.) This has been an issue that 8100 Geforce2 Dell customers have been experiencing for more than a year now. I understand that things go wrong and are at times difficult to troubleshoot, but then that's why the people in PD are paid the big bucks. Eventually, it will come time to replace my laptop. If this issue is still around by then, I'll buy a Gateway or an IBM.

Hi, just FYI: I met the exact same problem.
But
the driver from Dell ver 1.7.6.0 seems no such problem. That means, I roll back the video driver to this version and there's no such problem any more (at least much much better! But for me, no).
BTW, I updated BIOS to the newest version, still keep the 1.7.6.0 video driver.
Hope this a little help.
