RAM not registering

ok so i bought 2 4GB sticks of RAM (crucial DDR PC-3 12800 / unbiffered non-ECC * DDR3 1600 1.35 V ) for the dell inspiron n5050, im using linux mint 14 64 bit, terminal output is

me@root ~ $ uname -m
x86_64

i havent upgraded anything else, factory standards pretty much when it comes to hardware

so it is 64 bit OS on home server...but its not registering the other 4GB stick? any ideas from anyone how to resolve this ?
i really need to extra memory to be picked up :(

If neither module will read in that socket, the socket is bad - the mainboard needs to be replaced.

Does the BIOS sense both modules (f2 at powerup)?  If not, try reseating them - and if that doesn't work, try each module one at a time in each socket until you isolate the bad module or bad socket.
