Reinstalling Vista on Studio 15 - Driver Issues
Hey,
After wasting hours and hours, Im here in need of help.
I have a Studio 15,Intel Core 2 Duo, T-8100@2.1GHz Processor, 3GB of RAM, 250GB HD. Purchased in Sept 08. I decided to reinstall Vista finally and painstakingly backed up all my data and programs in prep. When selecting this laptop I chose the higher processor and upgrade on RAM (as well as video card) because I need to work on video files of HD quality and was assured by Dell this would work no problem. It hasnt. At all. Very shaky, jerky video playback, the machine shuts down often, freezes in windows explorer once every day or two, the disc drive repeatedly thinks I am loading a cd/dvd and makes awful noise, when I shut the lid and re open it later it 'hangs' for 20 minutes before finally getting going.. and those are the problems off the top of my head, which led me to reinstalling Vista (MS should be upgrading EVERYone to windows 7 and begging them not to jump ship after forcing this joke on us).
I reinstalled vista, the 2nd time worked. From there I tried to patch my old drivers (which were updated this week manually) into either DELL > drivers or just C:drivers, but perhaps I dont know enough on the order of operations on how to reinstall the drivers. Is there a way to update my drivers? On Dells website I download it, but it only downloads an 'application manifest' type, when I try to DL it it errors out. I can see my graphics are blurry and horrid right now too. This shouldnt be so hard, so any advice is much appreciated.
Fairly irrelevant, but I just checked Windows Experience Index is now only a "1", used to be "4" before re installing Vista. This laptop has been cursed since purchase and is dangerously close to going out the 15th story window.:emotion-12:

Which one - specifically? There are a number of different models - i.e. 1535/36/37, 1555/57/58, 1569?
????
"Patch"? Dell > Drivers / C:\ > Drivers?
It doesn't work like that. You have to install the drivers - in the same way you install programs.
Any drivers which don't have an install/setup file, have to be updated in Device Manager.
Yup: Drivers Installation Order.
First of all... make sure you're going to the 'Drivers & Downloads' page for your particular model Studio 15.
And choose the appropriate version of the OS - i.e. Vista 32bit/64bit.
Next... before you start downloading the various drivers, I'd advise creating a 'Drivers' folder somewhere, and in that folder, create sub-folders with names pertaining to the drivers available - i.e. Chipset, Network, Audio, etc etc.
Back at the Drivers & Downloads page - when you click on a drivers download link, it'll open in a new page - with the actual download link.
(FWIW - I personally prefer to right-click on files, and 'open the links in a new tab'. That way, you never lose the main drivers/downloads page)
Another word of advice at this stage: Certain driver categories offer a number of different downloads.
For instance - there may be half a dozen download options under 'Network' - to account for (i.e.) various wireless mini-cards.
So you need to identify your specific card before downloading any drivers.
You can do that in Control Panel/Device Manager. Your card will be listed under 'Network Adapters'.
Finally... DON'T use the Dell Download Manager option! It's known to cause all manner of problems. Select the browser option instead!
Let us know how you get on :emotion-5:

Hey guys,
After researching the internet for months, I have finally found a solution to this problem. Go to the Intel website http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?ProductID=3246&DwnldID=18631 and download/install the drivers listed.
The drivers at this link are older drivers for the graphics card which work and you are not going to have the problem anymore. The actual problem is happening because Windows 7 is not compatible with your computer which has 3gb of RAM. You can downgrade your RAM to 2gb or upgrade it to 4gb, none of them ideal….or just download and install the older drivers listed at the link ;).
Make sure you do NOT install the newer graphics drivers when running your regular Windows Upgrade process. Because if you do, you will have the same problem again….and you will have to download/install these older drivers again.
I have seen over 30 threads on the Dell web community web, and at least 50 external threads/blogs on the internet (thousand of users – literally). None of them giving the actual solution. But here I’m finally solving your problem Dell. You are welcome…I’ll take a free laptop for the favor, you have my info.
