replace hard drive on d430
I've been having problems with low disk space on my Latitude D430. I have vista which is taking much of the 32 GB solid state memory. I want to upgrade to a larger hard drive and checked on the 64 GB solid state and was shocked to fine it is about $2k for my $2800 laptop! I'm willing to go to a regular (not solid state) hard drive but of the last 5 (yes, 5) orders I've place, two have been cancelled for no reason, and all three that have been delivered (yes, all) have been 2" too long to fit in the compartment. To be sure I wasn't missing something, I confirmed this with technical support when I called them for instructions. The Latitude D430 was the top of the business line when I bought it and is still under warranty. Does Dell no longer make the correct hard drive so soon after production? Has anybody had similar problems? Help!

here's the specs for that drive from samsung. no i haven't actually put one in but i worked on a laptop that had a hs08xjc samsung which is the same version and it was working good. the hs08xjc is the 80 gb version.
you might want to try to put your drive in an external hard drive adapter and see if another computer recognizes it.

I did put the Toshiba drive in a 1.8" USB enclosure and the drive works fine. I think the difference is that the Toshiba is ATA-4 and Samsung is ATA-7... command sets might be different.
I will probably order the Samsung drive from eBay

ATA-7 is often used to refer to SATA drives - these won't work in place of EIDE (ATA-6 and earlier) drives.

you could be right, i missed that one. i wonder whether the toshiba would've worked in the ibm without giving me the 2010 error.

But I guess if the 80GB N1C fits, 120GB N1C should fit as well, as they are both 8mm.

The drive currently in my system is: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/P154872/specs.htm , the 60GB one, HS06THB, and is 5mm deep.
The 5200RPM Samsung, http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/P159843/specs.htm , is 8mm, and I am wondering if that will actually fit in my bay.
I have gold support for my laptop, so I should really give them a call and find out.
Regards

the d430 that i worked on that had the 80 gb: i didn't actually see the drive installed. i used pc wizard and that was the drive listed. i don't know whether he had to do any adaptations to get it to fit so you might want to do a little more research. 3 mm is a lot when it comes to hard drives fitting.

This is what I ordered for mine. 128GB ZIF SSD Solid State. It will work fine, and I've orderd parts from this retailer before. If I remember correctly - they'll arrive within 3 days US to US.

I ordered and received the Samsung drive from HK. $143 shipped... works very well. And it was a factory sealed item.

The seller shipped it the day after I made the payment, on 11/6, and it showed up in TX on 11/13. Not bad, considering a lot of domestic ground shipments take five business days:emotion-1:

I hear that SSD's are not worth the money yet. I would go with a new 5400rpm HDD.
I think they are 1.8" for your laptop, as the standard HDD size today is 2.5"
Google it! You can probally find some good deals on ebay or Craigs List.
