Replacing Fixed Disk on Latitude D630

I purchased this laptop used without the hard drive although it does have the genuine windows xp product tag on it.  I installed a hard drive from a different model dell in it and it tries to boot (windows 7) but cannot because of invalid drivers.  Questions:

1.  Can I install Windows 7? (No drivers on Dell support site)

2.  Can I install XP?  (Have prodcut code but no software)

3.  How do I go about selecting and installing the correct drivers?

Thanks in advance.  Chris

Hi Chris,

Welcome to the community.

I would like to inform you that this system doesn't have any drivers available for Windows 7.

You can install Windows XP or Vista on this system. Please check the link below where you can find information on installing windows:

You can visit the link below for requesting the backup discs for your system:

I hope I was able to answer your query today.

Thanks and Regards

Windows 7 runs fine on the system and it runs better than Vista. The 64 bit version may or may not be compatible depending on the processor but the Windows 7 upgrade advisor will let you know.

Install the Vista drivers as you would on Windows Vista some will say Windows 7 has a newer driver so you can just finish the setup. I think the Video drivers also comes as an optional update in Windows 7. Note the Windows Vista drivers will work fine for everything except Bluetooth but for that you may take a Windows 7 driver from another system.

See Windows Reinstallation Guide/A Clean Install of Windows 7 for optimum results:

Thanks!  I take it Windows 8 is right out.  Is it because the hardware cannot support the OS?

I installed WIndows 8 on a Latitude D820, which is just slightly older than the D830/D530. Windows 8 more or less had all the drivers needed for this unit inbuilt. I would recommend WIndows 7 over Windows 8 however. Of course as mentioned earlier Dell haven't released drivers for either Windows 7 or Windows 8 on this model so it isn't officially supported but that doesn't mean it doesn't work.

The disk appears to have windows 7 but won't boot do to invalid drivers.  I have downloaded the vista drivers as zip and exe files.  How can I install them on the unbootable drive?  I have a windows 7 recovery cd.
