Screen hinge is very loose.

Question

Hello,   I purchased an Inspiron 630m in April of this year for a gentlemen in our company.    He has told me one of the hinges (I believe it's the one on the right as you are looking at the screen) is very loose and getting more loose each day.   He is worried that eventually the screen will no longer function.   We purchased the 2 year on-site economy support plan.    What do I need to do to get this fixed?   Thanks, Robert Barrett

Robert, You dont need to call Dell. Just remove the hinge cover and tighten the hinges. I did the same on my Inspiron 6000.

You can take something not metal like a plastic putty knife or anything and pop that little plastic piece on back of that hinge up and loose. Then you can most likely see a screw there and just tighten it. But on some laptops those hinges get broken in half. You need to see if a simple tightening of the screw is the fix. Now I don't know this model laptop but all I have dealt with have been basically the same to try that and just be careful not to damage the plastic cover. If you do one can always be bought very cheap. Do this with the lid closed first and you may never even need to open the lid to see the screw. Message Edited by dbramlet on 11-14-200612:32 PM

My 6000 is doing that too, But I dont get where I need to tighten it?

I wish I could tell you exactly but don't know the 6000. However all the laptops I have worked on are about the same. Close the LCD and turn the laptop around so you are facing the back. On each end where the hinges are you should see the plastic covers and a gap below that. Using something flat and plastic being best just slide it into that little gap and slowly work it upward. Should pop up giving you access to the screws. I think you can go to Dell support and with your service tag number find a diagram of this and even maybe d/l the manual on how to take the laptop apart. But just look closely at those covers and you should see how the back should pop upwards. But sort of pop the backside up leaving the front side intact for now.

even if they can't fix the problem, they will get feedback that their hinge design is flawed. if you don't tell dell that the design has this problem, then maybe in the year 2008 when you get a new dell, you may have to fact the same problem.
