Shift keycap came off

Question

my shift key cap came off. It's not broken. I actually popped it off to clean under it because it was sticky. Having a hard time getting it back on and wonder if there's a trick. I can see that there's the metal bar and where it goes, that there are two platic hinge points at the back and where they go, and the two snap on points at the front. But even when I get things lined up it won't snap on and it's obviously a delicate piece. How do the repair folk do this? I bet they have a sure fire method.

keys rarely snap back into place - when keys come off, the repair folks usually replace the keyboard. sorry, but you may be up the proverbial creek.

Hi, this is exactly what happened to our daughter's shift key. They sent us a new keyboard (was here in 24 hours!). I am actually posting right now trying to figure out how to put it on without breaking it.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but throwing away keyboards because a keycap came off is a waste. On most keyboards they're made to come on and off. That's how you clean under them, how you replace a worn or broken or lost keycap, how you switch keycaps if you want a dvorak layout. It's also how the keycaps get on there in the first place. There is a common tool sold for pulling keycaps for just these reasons.

This one would snap on and be just fine but when the part it snaps too is laying down in its slot it's a little too low. Like I need to prop it up, snap on the cap, and then remove whatever's propping it up.

You sure the repair benches don't have some trick for getting these back on?

In our situation, we were still under warranty, and this is what Dell said that we needed to do. I had contacted them merely asking for a replacement key. They sent me out a new keyboard.
