shutdown problems INSPIRON 9100

Question

although my INSPIRON 9100 obviously has a built in battery , as every
laptop obviously has , I only use my INSPIRON 9100 laptop solely
connected to the mains , so when I either want to shut it down , or
want to reboot it , it gets stuck and won't properly shut down
even if if try to press CTRL + ALT + DELETE keys , it still gets stuck and won't shutdown , so the only solution left is as follows
---------------
- unplug the mains power supply ,and wait 1 hour & 20 mns , so that
it runs dry ( I mean the battery gets flat ) , so that it runs out of battery power
your great help would be appreciated to solve the problem
could it be a BIOS problem ??

It won't even shut down if you hold the power button for 5 seconds?  Plus you do know the battery is removeable, right?

U are 100 % right , by pressing the power button down for 5 secs , it does indeed properly shutdown , so U actually helped me to successfully solve the
problem ,
but what I can't actually understand , up to one week I didn't have to use this clever " trick " U kindly advised me to do ,
I would like to know why I now have to use this new method , what is the actual technical reason for this problem ??

The 'hold the power button for five seconds' should only be used in case of a last resort, as I've heard that it could eventually mess up the hard drive.  The original problem of not properly shutting down could be a problem with some sort of virus or spyware.  Perhaps Norton Antivirus and a good spyware protection device would work.  Spybot Search and Destroy is a good one and also Ad-aware, which are both free to download off the internet.  I am assuming of course you don't have any of these protections enabled. I don't have NORTON , but instead I have the McAfee security centre which I purchased from DELL with the machine one month ago, and now i just installed

your two softwares Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-aware, which I downloaded off the internet.

they actually removed 27 spywares

I have the same shutdown problems with my inspiron xps.
The XPS and the 9100 are very similar...

I have spybot s&d and I have lavasoft.
I also have norton antivirus and internet security 2005.

However, my system has the same problems as above, after I hiy shutdown the system does not shutdown it stays at the blue screen (welcome) and the hdd light is on. I know holding the button for five seconds is risky but it's the only way. I have the stock drivers and this is really annoying...
All of my spyware detection rules are updated as is norton.
I ran both scans numerous times as well as registry mechanic and executive software diskeeper (defrag). No luck...
