PROBLEM
whenever i listen to any music it jumps, stutters and cracks. I've downloaded the latest drivers, removed all enhancements, disabled wireless network card. And still it stutters. I contacted Dell but they seem to have no idea whats wrong. I'm just wondering if anybody hear could know anything i could do that would work?

Are you using any LightFX during audio playback? If you are, I would advise that you disable it (either leave the lights on or off, no fancy effects at all) as this is one cause for the stutters, cracks and jumps in audio playback. I believe it is a Dell QuickSet issue as I have plugged in external sound cards which has not solved the problem... only Dell can address this issue so it is a matter of time before they release new drivers.

My M1710 isn't the first I've come across with this issue under Vista as it was working fine under XP.

As a new M1710 owner, I sympathize with your situation. After hours of annoyance, I wiped vista off my drive and installed XP. After installing all of the patches and drivers from Dell's site; everything runs like a dream. No sound issues - AT ALL. Simply put, vista's drivers are not ready, and trying to make things work will only lead to frustration. I highly recommend installing windows xp on your new machine.

In advanced power options in Vista, check the settting for Minimum Processor State. Set it to 100% and see if it fixes it. I had crackling audio on my XPS M140, and this fixed it.
