Sony DVD Driver?

Question

I have a Dell Inspiron E1405. The DVD+RW-DW-Q58A no longer loads or read media. The Computer/Harware tree showed a yellow! by the drive. I tried reloading the driver to avail. I then uninstalled the driver. XP discovered the DVD drive and attempted to install the driver but failed. Since I cannot use the DVD drive to load anything, where can I get and how do I install the driver? I found a web site that showed it had the driver (or is it firmware or are they one in the same)? Anyhow, when I attempted to use the download, it says 'no matched drive' even though the file downloaded is for the Sony DVD+RW-DW-Q58A (Dell version). Thank you

in device manager, look at the properties of the drive and post back with the error message.

Hi:

I followed your instructions and it still has the same problem. States it found new hardware (Sony) searches for driver, cannot find, says hardware may not function correctly. Manual search for driver does not reveal any.

you need to tinker in the registry.

Go to start> run and type in "regedit" (without the quotes) then press ok.

1) Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values by:

a) Expand the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" key (looks like a folder) by double clicking it.

b) Expand the "SYSTEM" Key

c) Expand the "CurrentControlSet" Key

d) Expand the "Control" Key

e) Expand the "Class" Key

f) Carefully look for a key containing the following string of letter and numbers:

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.

(The full path is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} )

g) Highlight this key by left clicking once on it

h) On the right hand side you are looking for "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters", once you find these delete them by high lighting (left clicking on them once) and then right clicking on them and choosing "delete"

NB only one key may be present but still delete it.

Now reboot and your optical drive(s) should function again.

NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software.

OK. If I did a complete system restore using the Dell XP recover disk will that cure my problem? Problem is/may be the XP recover is on DVD. I did a system backup 3 months ago using Roxio MyPC backup which includes 2 diskettes and 3 dvds. If I use this will loading the 2 diskettes bring me to a point where the DVD drive will function and allow reading the DVDs? Thank you

With the driver as part of XP, I assume this driver could become corrupted or removed from the system? I guess at this point I need to reload XP. If I do so can I also assume this driver will be loaded correctly?

Hold it! Looks like after I did a shutdown of the system, the DVD drive is now working! Your suggestion *did* resolve my problem. Thank you

Well after using the DVD drive, it once again has an ! by the device manager. I try to load the driver from the Dell driver DVD....says there is no driver found. The drive is now back to acting the same way. Can you help? Thank you
