Sound icon on taskbar

Up until a few weeks ago I could adjust the sound volume by clicking on the icon in the task bar and adjusting the slider as needed...this option is no longer available to me.

I have a Dell ?Inspiron 1721 laptop.  I have tried removing the icon from the task bar, closing the laptop and then rebooting and reinstalling the icon.  I have also updated the drivers.  All to no avail.

In order to adjust the sound now I have to go to the control panel and this is time consuming and a nuisance.  When I click the sound icon I get a box indicating the current level.  If I right click, I get the OPEN SOUND MIXER which does not do anything or I can select Sound , Recording devices, or Playback devices all of which simply bring me to the sound properties menu.

I would appreciate any advice I can get for this so that I can fix the problem.  Thank you

I am sorry...I do not understand this reply!!!  Are you telling me to Google for an answer?  I checked this but it does not answer my question

The icon itself is still there but when I click I am not getting the response I am looking for...namely the volume control slider so as to be able to adjust volume directly through this icon...sorry for any confusion...I  am still looking for help!!!
