SPDIF does not work on Dell E1705

Question

As the subject states, I can not get SPDIF to work. And, yes I have enabled it under the volume control panel. The stereo and the cables both work fine. They were used previously on a 9100. I am also using the 9100 S-Video, Video, and SPDIF multi-connecter on my E1705 since I didn't receive one from Dell. Is the 9100 multi-connector not compatible with the E1705? If it isn't, where can I get on for my E1705? If it is compatible, what other things could be causing it to not work.

I don't know the answer but just one thought, did you enable spdif in the PowerDVD audio setttings under Speaker Configuration? Jim

I'm not using PowerDVD. There still should be audio under normal Windows operation.

I found out why SPDIF won't work. It doesn't work when I plug in the laptop into my Dell W3706MC TV through a DVI to HDMI cable. When I unplug the DVI cable the audio works again. I am using the latest drivers from Dell and previously tried using third party drivers as well with no success. Does anyone have any solutions to fix this problem? Am I going to have to send this back to Dell to get this fixed? Any help will be appriciated.

HDMI carries the audio from a device to your TV. I may be wrong, but I think the DVI to HDMI connection you making is confusing the notebooks drivers. DVI itself does not carry the audio, but the drivers may think you have an HDMI to HDMI connection, and is piping the audio (or trying to) through the DVI cable to the HDMI port.. unsuccessfully. That's just my guess.

I do suggest you ( see disclaimer below) go to Start -> Control Panel -> Sound, Speech, and Audio Devices -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Audio Tab and select your audio output of choice from the dropdown menu there, WHILE the DVI cable is connected to the TV and the TV is on.

Under the nVidia Control Panel the cable is detected as a DVI to DVI connection. I tried your suggestion and there is only one option to choose for audio output.
