Studio 17 screen case coming off... Photos Inside. Please help!!

I've had a Dell Studio 17 for about a year now. The laptop has been well-taken care of and never dropped so I was frustrated when I saw the screen case coming off. I try to snap it back into place but it doesn't stay. I included some pictures. Can someone please help? How do I fix/replace

I've become exremely annoyed and am just tired of the poor quality parts/design to be truthfully honest. How do I fix this?

Thanks!!

The hinge is the problem - have it replaced and it'll solve the issue.

Thanks for the reply. How do I get a replacement hinge and fix it? Can I just take it to a repair shop or do I need to get the hinge from Dell?

If it's under warranty, have Dell repair it.  If not, what is the full model number - i.e., the XX in Studio 17XX?

You'll need the hinges -- parts-people.com should have them - and the service manual (support.dell.com, manuals).

Is there a Social Outreach Services department at Dell?  Customer Service tells me absolutely no such department exists.  Yet several people posting on the Forum report that this department has helped them to get their laptop repaired.

Seems that we are not the only ones.  There is even a Facebook group dedicated to broken hinges on Studio 17s.

Daughter's Studio 1735 left hinge just let go and back cover and frame around screen began to pull away.

Design defect.  Entire hinge is held together by tiny screw going into a small plastic tube.  How they expected a 17" screen to not put torque on that tiny ill-conceived design I do not know.

So far Dell Support has been anything BUT.

Sad news to owners of a very nice laptop.

When my laptop was a little over a year old, I had the same issue. In addition to the hinge, the entire frame separated. No one was willing to repair it. Had to send it back to Dell where the lid was replaced. Now, it is less than 2 years later, and it's happening again. I am wondering if the Inspiron has the same problem.

I invested many hours on the phone and online with Dell over the Studio 17 faulty hinge issue.

Dell was both non-responsive to the concerns we have all raised and did nothing to help.

I bit the bullet found a local computer repair shop who bought a new top case and replaced it for about $140.  (case online alone for about $90).

It is as good as new.  I think I will be more careful in grabbing and opening the lid by the corner and will try to remind myself to open it from the middle.

The screen is so darned big that lifting repeatedly from the corner torques the cased and the case being held together at that stress point by two minute screws is a failure of Dell's design team.  Almost as classic as the Dell laptops I had at work whose hardrives all overheated and crashed one after the other.

In recent weeks I have learned that companies that flaunt social media (facebook/twitter) cringe at the thought of repeated posts on these "happy sites" about problems.

I suggest anyone with any problems visit and post on Dell's facebook groups every day about your problems.  Make sure they are Dell's facebook groups and not the complaint groups.  Their marketing department cares only for what the public sees on their official sites.  Same goes for the Dell twitter feed.  I couldn't get Dell to acknowledge my existence until I began to post complaints on twitter and then I heard from them.

They still didn't help but I heard from them.

Good luck!  My daughter now keeps the Studio 17 as a backup and is wildly happy with her new ASUS, it is smaller than the 17" Studio but smokes.
