system restore after hard disk crashed
I have a Dell Inspiron N5050. My hard disk crashed. Now I have a hard disk. Since Windows (+ Office?) is inbuilt and placed on a section of the hard disk I cannot install Windows in the 'traditional' way (Windows on DVD). I have 3 System Restore Disks (DVD's), but I guess they are of no use anymore. I still have a right to the Windows and Office I once had. How can I get them back?

If you have the restore DVDs, boot the first one (put it in the drive, press F12 at powerup, and select the DVD drive from the boot list) and it will restore the system to exactly the way it was when you received it from Dell.
The Windows license key is on a label in the battery compartment and if you purchased the system with Office (i.e., NOT the starter version), that key is on a small card that came with the system.

Thanks for your quick reaction. The service tag for my Dell N5050 is <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>. I have been looking for the MPI card you mention, but I cannot find it and I don't remember having received such a card.
On the backside of my laptop is a sticker which reads: Windows 7 Home PremiumOA.
On the next line there is a barcode. Above this it writes 'Dell'. To the right is written OXPCG3.
On the next line I read: Product key .
Below this there is a second bar code and to the right I read: X16-96072.
Next line: 00196-225-415-771
Below this sticker there is a second one which gives the service tag and the express service code, which is .
Below the second sticker there is a third one wich gives the Dell Model which is N5050, the model no.: 5050-0617. It also gives the colou (black, the countrey (Greece) and again the Dell Service tag.
I hope that Microsoft Office can be restored even without the MPI card.

Office can be downloaded from Microsoft as long as it's NOT the Starter edition that was shipped a few years ago - that is no longer supported. However, without the product key (on the card) it can't be activated - and if that is lost, Microsoft will not replace it. If that happens you'll be out the cost of a new license for Office.
