Temperature Issue (problem) with Dell Studio 1458
Dear Community,
I've bought a Dell laptop back in 2010 when i was in USA. Laptop parametars were the following:
Dell Studio 1458 with i7 Q720 1.6 Ghz CPU,
AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series,
ST9500420AS 500 GB HDD on AdvSMART,
2 x 4 GB RAM DDR3.
and etc.
Two times per year (usually every six months) i'm cleaning the dust from the laptop, ( motherboard, fan, etc. ) so far i haven't been changed the thermal compound and pad. However, i did that successfully yesterday (this is not the first time that i'm changing the compund and pads on different laptops) but sadly the problem still remains :( Back in 2014 my charger get fired, and i've to purchase a new one then i've decided to get one from China. (looks the same as previous, and the current and voltages are equial ), and the laptop works perfectly fine until 6 months when i've upgraded my OS from windows 8.1 to windows 10. Then the troubles get started - my CPU temperature is always around ~70 degree ( Celsious ), and when i start some heave softwares it get's up to 100 + degree when the laptop turned off due to high temperature picks. When the problem stars ( 2-3 months ago ), i've decided to clean the laptop, but sadly there isn't too much dust on the fan and monther board as well. Then yesterday i've decided to change the thermal compound and pad, after the change the issue still remains, and the only difference is that my normal temperature drops from 70 to 60 degrees, but then i start those heavy apps then in a mature of 5-10 mins the temperature get's into 100 + degree and laptop switch off automatically. :(
From my perspective i've an issue with currency or os windows 10, or maybe the fan. However, the fan is running perfectly fine when the temperature starts growing, also the fans speed starts growing as well.
Does any of you have similar issue, or have an idea how to improve the temperature sittuation?
Sorry for the long post, but i want to be as more as precisely and detailed as i can.
P.S. let me know if you need more details.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Kind regards and greetings from Bulgaria. :)

Hi Zahari,
Is the OS installed on your system Win 10?
Your machine is not compatible to work with Win 10 - see this link - http://dell.to/1VM5Sft
Did you happen to face any other issues with Win 10 on the system? What are the "heavy apps" that you are referring to? Are there any bluescreens / system crashes?
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/1ra7TVD
Reinstall the video drivers from the same site above or from the vendor site - http://bit.ly/1RXcKFr
If the issue persists, then restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - leave the system for as long as possible in the BIOS environment with the adapter connected and check if the system turns off at any point.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.
Also, run a stress test on the system - http://dell.to/21y9GPi
Keep us updated.

Hi Rishi,
Thank you very much for your help, much appreciated!
1. Yes, i'm using windows 10. I saw that site that you are referring to, and yes all the Dell Studios somehow are not "compatible" with Windows 10, this is senseless from my perspective (and to be honest i felt cheated). The HW is not that old to support windows 10, however Dell stopped the Studio series ( as far as i remember 2013/2014 ) without any official reason, and all the people that bought Studio laptop were unhappy and our trust to the vendor were shake even though i've invested more than 2000$ in that laptop.
2. The "heavy apps" actually are not that heavy because they are Windows defender, Corel Draw, AutoCad and etc.
3. I've scanned for the latest Bios but the latest one were created on Last Updated: 03 Nov 2011, and currently i'm using it.
4. I've reinstalled the video driver, but sadly again without any success to my laptop temperature issue :(.
5. When i'm running the BIOS the temperature is again around ~ 60 degree. ( Which from my perspective is more then usual )
6. Last week i've run a stress test using dell software, but everything seems to be working correctly. Furthermore i've run a different tests using Hirens software ( Linux based tests ).
I guess that most probably windows 10 are the problematic one, and i should go into a direction to downgrade and to feel the bad taste to be a dell user, where the vendor stopped caring about their "users and investors"
Does any of you have any other idea, or any suggestions ?
Kind Regards,
Zahari

These systems tended to run hot out of the box -- even with Windows 7. That said, given the age of the system, if you've never replaced the thermal pads that sit between the heatsinks and the CPU and GPU heat slugs, start there.
If that doesn't solve the issue, does the problem lessen when demanding apps like AutoCAD are not running?

Hi byejn63,
I've changed the thermal pads, three days ago and nothing have been really changed. The temperature drops with ~10 degree and that's it nothing major.
Well when i'm using only browser and etc. then the normal temperature is like 60-70 degree, however when start even Windows Defender to search for viruses then the temperature increase to enormous levels like 100+ Degree ( Celsius ).
Last night i've started a backup procedure, to redundant my data away from the laptop, and then i would probably go into a direction to change the OS, and probably i'll choose Windows 8 for instance.
Do you have any other ideas in mind :)
Kind regards,
Zahari

Hi Zahari,
Thank you for the update.
Since you have updated the BIOS and reinstalled the video drivers and have managed to clean any possible dust accumulated in the fans and air vents and as stated above, you have already replaced the thermal pads, the possible required parts to be replaced would now be the system fan and the motherboard, in that order.
If the system tends to work fine, but only overheats, I would advise you to try using a notebook cooling pad and check if that helps - one can find some deals on ebay - http://ebay.eu/1QBtNp6 or Amazon - http://amzn.to/1riZbnS (could not find a direct link for Bulgaria). This might provide an insight on the product and the prices and you might find some in a local store, perhaps?
Change in OS might not help with the fans and heat issues, but downgrading the OS might help in stability and increase performance of your system model.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Dear community,
First of all i would like to say sorry for the late response.
Thank you very much for your feedback, it was very positive and structured.
Here you can find the historical details about my laptop.
1. I've reinstall the OS from windows 10 to windows 7, but the issue continue to appear and my laptop was able to gain more then 100 degree Celsius.
2. I've opened my laptop once again, take a deeper view of the motherboard, the fan, pad, heater (radiator) and etc. Then i've decided to change the therm paste and the pads once again. ( i've found that one of the pads have not been changed previously, i've missed that one ). Once done i've proceed with the fan, i've opened the entire fan form inside ( with screwdriver ) and he was completely out of any dusk it was just like polished, but... when i opened the hole that is sucking the heat i've noticed that the hole was full of dust it was like 2 centimeters (a few inches) of dust. Then i've cleaned that dust away from the hole of the fan. Next step was to clean the heater ( radiator ), again opening with a screwdriver and looking for inside dust, and surprisingly i've found that it's full of dust... start cleaning once again.
3. Then it was a time for a tests.... again surprisingly when i turned the laptop on, the fan start work as before, but the dust that he pull out of the laptop was too much. After that the OS start loading normally ( windows 7 ), and when i login i started the program that's measuring the temperature, and luckily i saw that the temperature of the CPU and Video card was around ~50 degree Celsius, and this continue for the next 48 hours of non-stop working.
Conclusion:
Continue reading, trust more it yourself and do not stop improving your tech skills.
Thanks for your help and i wish you all the best dear community.

Hi Zahari,
Thank you for the update.
Certainly, looks like cleaning the assembly and vents and the grease on the thermal pads have certainly helped in this case.
Should you need any help / info, do write to us.
