The Phantom Squareness... Strange Shadows on Screen
I had this on my Precision as well but it's shown up on my replacement Latitude E5570. It's as if a window is open but not visible, showing its Windows in focus shadow. It exists only on the desktop background and does not interfere with anything on top of it.
Obviously tried clicking away to something else which didn't do it. Restarting does clear it but on wake from sleep there may or may not be a different one there.
It's not a huge problem but does irk me somewhat. Anyone have this experience?

Two different systems with the same issue? That does not sound like a laptop hardware fault. Did the box appear on both systems starting from the very first out of the box bootup? Or did the box appear after you had installed software? Try this, before allowing the system to enter sleep mode, be sure to close all open windows (boxes), applications, etc. So nothing is open on the desktop. Then let the system enter sleep, then wake it up.

I followed that logic before and made sure all boxes were closed, even going so far as to close all open software that I had actively running. Obviously the background stuff was still running.
Just to verify, the system should sleep when the lid is closed, correct? Could something open while the lid is closed, maybe triggered by connecting to a different wifi network from work to home?
Incidentally, the shadow is different each time and sometimes there are multiples but only appears to be showing up on the Primary display. When the system is at work, it is my center large monitor. When at home it is the laptop screen but the same thing still persists.

Could it be something that Windows is forgetting to refresh? Some layer where it is persisting? i tried things like changing the background image to see if that updated it but it did not.

* Yes.
Could something open while the lid is closed, maybe triggered by connecting to a different wifi network from work to home?
* Possibly. I would start by disabling everything in the Startup folder, then restarting the laptop and retest.
