Touchpad Driver
I have just reloaded a Dell 1564 after a total disk failure. I have loaded W7 64 bit from the Dell disk provided and then the drivers from the other Dell disk. Now when I click on the mouse buttons they don't work at all. I have tried downloading various drivers from various sites including the one from my product page but they all fail in various ways. Some cause the left button to work like pressing the left and then right button but none can give me a working pair of mouse buttons. I think it is an Alps touchpad but I'm not sure. I'm also unconvinced that the driver is 64 bit. Can anyone tell me where I can get a driver that will work?

Oh, I forgot to say. If I plug in a USB mouse it works fine!

Hi Neil Barton,
Welcome to the Community,
You can find the correct Touch pad driver for your system in the link below :
www.dell.com/.../DriverFileFormats
I would also suggest you to completely uninstall the Touch Pad driver and reboot the system and check if the Touch pad works.Since you are using Windows 7,system should automatically install the native drivers.
If it does not work after uninstalling and rebooting, try the above link to install the driver.
Let me know how it goes.
Thank You
Roshan.

Thanks Roshan,
I downloaded that driver but the results are still strange. If I click on items pinned to the task bar they start (but I can't right mouse on them) but clicking on the MS Start button (the blob) doesn't do anything. Then, when moving around the screen left mouse will work on some links and not others. It's very strange. Are there any other drivers I can try? Or do you know how I can find out exactly what sort of touchpad is installed (it isn't listed on the manifest for this machine). All of the tools I have read the driver rather than establishing exactly what the hardware is!
Thanks,
Neil

I read through the properties of the driver and it would seem to be an ALPS touchpad. Loading the latest 64 bit driver from there made things a lot worse and I've reloaded the one you identified. This time it has almost got it right! The left mouse button opens the start button and works the pinned icons. It doesn't work well in IE because it behaves as though you have clicked the left and right mouse buttons every time you click a link. Still, it very nearly makes it usable and with an external mouse working fine I think I'll call it quits.
Thansk for your help.

Did you try to uninstall the driver and just reboot the system to check if the touch pad was working( without you downloading and installing the drivers)? When you uninstall and reboot the system it should ideally pick up the native drivers from within the Windows 7 operating system.

Yes, I did try that. Unfortunately the result was the same. Since I can't excatly find out what board is in the machine (without taking it apart) and I've tried all the drivers I can find I'm going to give up. It's annoying because I know there is a driver that will work (the one that was on there) and it ought to be on the recovery disk but it isn't. Oh well, I give up.
Thanks for your suggestions.

After installing Windows 7 did you install the drivers in the correct order? For help to find the right order in which drivers needs to be installed use the link below:
support.dell.com/.../document
If the drivers are not installed in the correct order as given in the above link, some hardware may not function correctly. The driver which i had given in my previous post is the correct and the updated driver for the Tocuh pad on your system.
After making sure the drivers are installed in correct order,if it still does not work, boot your system to safe mode(tap F8 at start up(dell logo), and see if the touch pad is working correctly .
Let me know if you need further help.

This is the order I loaded them in:
├───1
│ DELL_SYSTEM-SOFTWARE_A01_R260746.exe
│
├───2
│ R243176.exe
│ R242805.exe
│ R242825.exe
│
├───3
│ R265301.exe
│
├───4
│ R271008.exe
│
├───5
│ R235168.exe
│
├───6
│ Dell_QuickSet_A07_R272666.exe
│
├───7
│ R237742.exe
│
└───8
R285943.exe
R241392.zip
At the end of that neither mouse button works. By rolling back the driver I can get it to the point where pressing the left mouse button is the same as pressing the left and then the right. This seems to be the ebst it can do, unless you can see what I'm doing wrong.

There is no problem with the order in which you've installed the drivers.Since the windows was just installed and also you have updated drivers correctly,to further check you can run a hardware diagnostics on the Touch Pad to confirm if it an hardware failure. You can run Custom test on the Touch Pad.
For help to Run the Test use the link below:

Not sure if you managed to resolve your issue. The same thing happened to me on my 1525.
Try this ftp://ftp1.dell.com/input/R165805.EXE
Hope it works
