Touchpad not working in xp
my hard disk of the insipron 8000 just crashed and so i installed a new one. after reloading a fresh copy of xp home, i found out that my touchpad is not working. i downloaded the xp version of the synaptics touchpad driver but it still does not work. i even tried to check the F2 setup and the toucpad is enabled there. so then i plugged an external mouse. that works fine. what surprises me is that in my last install of xp home, the same touchpad with the same driver was working. could someone please help me on this one,
i am so confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
You should test the touch-pad hardware by runing the Dell diagnostic test on this. I have a feeling that it will pass. You should then try updating the system BIOS and performing the troubleshooting steps below:

DELL-BobT: I am experiencing the same difficulties that fiji was, and though I have taken a look at your troubleshooting link, nothing has worked.
I am on an Inspiron 8100 running XP, and I had to replace my hard drive some time back. My external speakers and USB mouse all function fine, but I cannot get the Synaptics touchpad, stick, and internal speakers to work at all. I have installed all the latest drivers and updated the system BIOS, but I cannot get past the Dell diagnostic tests. (It's hard to move the cursor into the box if no touchpad or stick is detected...) However, the device manager always says that the Synaptics Touchpad on PS2/Port is working properly, but maybe that doesn't mean anything.
Any further help would be VERY MUCH appreciated.

I had the same problem, but downloaded something from
which fixed the problem like magic.

I installed upgrade Windows 2000 Professional and neither the touchpad nor the (standard) mouse works on Inspiron 7000

I installed the latest Synaptics driver. How do I tell whether I need Synaptics or ALPS touchpad driver?
