Touchpad not working or visible in Device Manager
I have a Latitude D400 that I bought second hand 3 years ago. I have recently been having problems with the touchpad. The first couple of times it stopped working I downloaded the driver and re-installed and everything was OK for a week. Then a couple of days then less than an hour. It now will not work at all. When I check in Device manager it only shows the external mouse I have attached or of I use the cursor and tab keys to navigate to D.M. it shows nothing in the mouse settings.
One of the IT guys at work suggests that possibly the ribbon cable to the touchpad has become detached as the pointer in the keyboard (middle of G,H,B keys) also doesn't work. Do I have a dead laptop or one that can be repaired easily. For easily I mean either cheaply or by myself.
Thanks in advance Pete

Hi Pete,
Welcome to the Community. If the touchpad is not detected in device manager, under pointing devices or mouse, then it could be that the palmrest cable is not seated in properly. Use the below link for help. Disconnect the ac adapter and battery before opening up the computer.
<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>
Hope this helps.
Thank you

I tried checking the seating of the palmrest/touchpad cables and could find nothing loose. I'm now assuming that I have a faulty touchpad.
My worry is that it could be something else as the pointing stick also doesn't work and that appears to be wired in somewhere else.
When I first got the problem "system restore" fixed the problem. The second time I downloaded the driver and that worked. Now nothing works but I can use an external mouse. I was concerned it was software not hardware so I did a virus check and nothing untoward was found (just tracking cookies).
