touchpad pointer jumps back when I take my finger off

This has happened a couple of times now. I don't know what causes it.

When I drag my pointer across the screen with the touchpad - the moment I take my finger off the touchpad, the pointer jumps back to its previous location. Once this starts, it keeps doing this. If I am very persistent and fast, I can get the pointer to eventually move to other parts of the screen, but it takes a while.

The first time this happened, a warm reboot fixed it. This time, all I had to do was "threaten" to restart (i.e. I got to the 'Turn off Computer' screen, but it actually cleared up before I had to restart).

This strongly indicates a software glitch, not a glitch in the hardware.

What kind of a boneheaded answer is that?? Why does ANYONE ask around in the community before calling Tech Support? Because it would take me 1/100th the time to fix it myself (if it's a simple fix) than spending half a day on the phone with Dellhi!
