touchpad problem on Inspiron 8600
Hello,
I replaced Windows XP by Windows 7 SP1 (32 bit) on a DELL Inspiron 8600, but unfortunately I lost touchpad, which no longer works ... All the drivers of this laptop are designed to run in XP.
The keyboard works well, but the touchpad and its buttons are not responding at all. However, it is possible to use an infrared mouse by connecting the receiver to a USB port.
The touchpad is hidden in the W7 device manager, but also carries a yellow exclamation mark.
I tried to download the latest drivers Alps (and other drivers), but the touchpad is still not working ...
Have you any idea to enable the touchpad working again?
Here are the features of the notebook (if you need more information, I would indicate to you):
Dell Inspiron 8600 Series
Service Tag: Service tag removed per privacy policy>
Pentium M 1.7 GHz / 600 MHz
Video controller: ATI Radeon 9600 Series
BIOS: A14
Pointing device: Touch Pad - PS / 2 Mouse
OS: Windows 7 (32-bit) SP1
I think many persons have managed the transition to W7 on this laptop, and the touchpad is working without encountering any problem (but how?)
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi espero01,
Dell Inspiron 8600 has not been tested with Windows 7 operating system. However you can download and install the touchpad driver in the compatibility mode and check if it works.

Hello,
Thank you for your fast answer.
Do you mean to try to install for my laptop the touchpad driver for Windows XP in compatibility mode?
I saw on the internet many users having the same PC with Windows 7 installed on it, and they didn't report any problem with the touchpad...
Regards.

Unfortunately, it didn't work neither in compatibility mode (tried XP SP2 and XP SP3)...
I get the following error message after the InstallShieldWizard:
A first small window with:
SetupDiEnumDriverInfo
Code=0x00000103
Then a second one:
ALPS Touch Pad Driver
Failed to Init Inf: 00000000
I found also a Dell (Alps) touchpad driver for Vista (32-bit), but it isn't working, nor in Vista compatibility mode...
Could you please suggest me anything other to try?
Thanks in advance.
Regards.

Hi espero01,
Download the R89598_5K9CG_SETUP_ZPE.exe from the Dell support site and double click on the file and extract it on the desktop in a folder. Look for setup file in the extracted folder. Right click ‘.exe’ file and click ‘Properties’. Click “install in compatibility mode’. Click on Application and select ‘Troubleshoot Compatibility’. Next, click on ‘Troubleshoot Program’. Click on Program worked in earlier versions of Windows. Click on ‘Windows XP’. Click on ‘Start the Program’. Do not hit ‘Next’ until the installation completes. Once the installation completes, click on ‘Next’.
Please let me know if this helps.

Hello,
Thank you for your suggestion. Finally, I managed to make work the touchpad on my DELL Inspiron 8600.
Now, the problem is that it is very instable, because often I cannot control the touchpad, and the prompter on the screen is running in every directions...
Then, for several minutes, I can get back the correct behaviour and usage of the touchpad, and so on.
Could you please suggest me a solution for that problem? This could be related to the touchpad driver that I use?
I have also a keyboard with top mouse button . This could also create a problem or not?
Thank you in advance for your kind help.
Best regards.
