Typing Quotations

Question

Hi. When I used to type in quotations using my desktop PC keyboard, (', '), I'd just have to type them and they'd appear on screen. With my Inspiron 6400; however, I find that I have to type the quotations then hit the spacebar before they appear. Is there a keyboard setting that I can set so that I can just type in quotations directly? I find it annoying to always have to type in quotations and press the spacebar before anything appears.

When you say 'appear', what program(s) are you using?

Any program. What I mean is that with my former desktop PC, this would be the process:

[Hold Shift]+[press ']=quotations

With the Inspiron 6400, the process of typing quotations looks like this:

Step 1: [Hold Shift]+[press ']
Step 2: Release Both keys
Step 3: [Press Space]
Result: Quotation Marks

Typing quotation marks for me went from a one step process to a three step process for some reason!

So I was wondering if that was the only way to type quotation marks in all programs with my Inspiron 6400 keyboard, or if there's some sort of keyboard configuration I have to work out.

This may be a driver problem, or simply your language bar settings. I definitely think it's a language bar issue. So how can I change the language settings of my keyboard in Windows XP?

I'd also like to add that when I do this:

Step 1: Press and hold [Shift]+[ ' ]
Step 2: Release and Press a letter (For example "E")
Result = ë

In case it's difficult to see, there are two dots above the resulting "E" resembling that of an accent of a language other than English, but my keyboard language settings, (I'm pretty sure), is set to "United States - International."

Does this mean I should set it to "English (United States)" instead?

Go into Control Panel | Regional and Language Options | Languages tab | Details You can change the keyboard language setting there.  I'd go for English (US). Rom
