could go in device manager and delete the usb stuff and let windows find it again on reboot.

what do you suggest as far as starting over?  reinstall windows?  reformat again (boo.,..) ?

Ya it worked before-but the last time i reformatted i remember having this problem but i cant remember how i fixed it.. it's been to long and i know it wasn't this hard last time!

i tried that... no luck,  i also tried uninstalling and deleting all driver info for ALL the drivers i installed when i reformatted.  then i rebooted and reinstalled them all doing the chip set first-no luck... still trying to reinstall sp2... this is rediculous

it might not hurt to format and start over and painful as it will be. you could run diagnostics first to see if that the usb ports are ok.

i ran diagnostics and it's fine... it is working sort of-i have had my mouse plugged in since before i reformatted and the mouse works.... i just can't plug any new devices into that or the other usb port.... if i unplug the mouse and replug it doesn't work until i reboot... also strange:
in device manager there are 4 working usb things -2 root hubs and two universal controllers and then one that doesnt work!  hmmmmmm

if you reinstall leave the mouse out until you get done.

ok.. I really can't do that again.
I re-reformatted.. reinstalled windows and reinstalled the drivers all correctly in the right order and without the mouse plugged in... SAME PROBLEM.  I connected the mouse and after a restart the mouse works but none of my memory sticks or external drives or anything will work-and I still have the yellow question mark of death
