Upgrade RAM

Pairs are better - if you're sure there's an open slot, you can add another 2 or install 2X4.

I am sure there is an open slot.  Oh...so 2+4 isn't recommended? (I don't need 8GB, and 4GB might be a little less, so had decided on 6GB).

Also is there a recommended manufacturer pairing or something?

RAM pairing is done in order to support dual and triple channels. It gives a little extra 'zip' to the bus speed and flow of information. However, there is the balancing act. If you are going to install 8 GB of ram, then it is better to install 2x4gb instead of 1x8gb or, as some systems have more than two slots, 1x2 1x4 1x2, etc. 
It is also common to push for paired ram because some systems have other needs that work better with pairs ram. I have even known systems that will not work properly without it. 

However, in your case you want 6GB of RAM and there is no 2x3GB pairing. The perfomance differences between paired 2x2gb ram and 1x2gb + 1x4gb is doing to lean more towards the 2/4gb pairing. You will be some perks with paired ram, but between having 4gb and 6gb of RAM, the 6GB perks will be better...in general.

There is still more to consider. Not all programs use all your RAM, and some programs will work better with paired ram. 
In general I would say go with the paired 2x4gb for 8gb ram. You may not think you need it right now, but you can find that pairing for about the same cost as it would be to setup 6gb ram, and you will be future proofing" your system better. Not to mention you will benefit from the higher ram and the pairing. 

Crucial, as listed on the other reply, is a good site for consumers to test how many slots they have and what kind of RAM they need without opening up their system. However, Crucial's prices from their site are a little high. Its best to go to Amazon, Tigerdirect, Newegg, or similar and pick out your RAM. Find the ram you want, and then shop around for price. 
Personally, I recommend Kingston HyperX RAM. I have used it in my systems for years. It is a matter or choice, but in general Kingston or Corsair is best if you buy from third party, or you can sometimes find the necessary parts bought directly from Dell.

Thank you so much for the detailed reply! It explains a lot to a layperson like me.

I take it that 2x4gb would be ideal. However, this would "double" my cost, as i would then need to purchase 2*4gb RAMs as opposed to just 1 to take my existing 2gb to 6gb.

My laptop usage is basic, with photo-edting being the only heavy usage. I am doubtful about the cost vs benefit for 2x4gb.

Now will need to make a decision about 2+2 or 2+4!!! Thanks  for your manufacturer recommendations.

Glad I could help to clarify some things. RAM is definitely one thing to go the little bit extra cost on. Unlike some things, RAM appreciates in value. If you plan on upgrading your whole system in 1-2 years than 6 gb at 1x4gb and 1x2gb should be fine, although not ideally running. However, if you plan on using your system exclusively or keeping it for closer to 2 years before changing out the whole system, then 8gb 2x4gb is great. It is definitely worth putting the extra bucks toward it now. 

Do some shopping around. Frys, Amazon, Tigerdirect, newegg, overstock, ebay, and many other sites complete pretty well on pricing. There are also other things to consider when you get RAM, but if you have any questions, let me know. 

I am going to be a student for another 2 years minimum! :).
