USB mouse and keypad problems
I have a USB mouse and numberpad from micro innovations that I use on my Inspiron 5150. Both of these devices worked fine for about 1 day when I first purchased them. Now neither will work. I know they get power because the light on the optical mouse comes on. I believe it is a USB port issue. It seems as though the ports are not recognizing when devices are plugged into them. I have tried both devices on my PC and they work great. Anyone else having this problem or know how to resolve it? My Device Manager says that USB controllers are functioning properly. I have also tried an AC powered USB Hub. Still nothing. I have also gone through the steps in FAQ for USB ports. Any help would be appreciated.

wilsonmatk,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
Try upgrading to Windows XP SP1. This will enable USB 2.0, if your device requires this. If these devices came with special drivers, then reinstall these on the computer.

I already have SP1 installed for Windows XP. This is what it says in Device Manager under USB controllers:
Intel(r) 82301DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD
Intel(r) 82301DB/DBM USB Unirversal Host Controller - 24C2
Intel(r) 82301DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4
Intel(r) 82301DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
I only have 2 USB ports on my 5150 so I'm not sure if it is normal to have 4 USB controllers installed.

I have a similar problem (i am on inspiron 8600). I have updated all Bios, drivers, including the latest driver for the touchpad. I have XP pro with latest updates etc.
I used a USB mouse till a few weeks ago, then it stopped working. I thought it was broken and got a new one (saitek wireless optical). it did not work. the driver installed was "USB Browser mouse", it said device working properly but not working. Have gone through all the trobleshooting...
the last one was to uninstall the device, which i did. now it does not see any driver at all (I have tried adding hardware: nothing happens. if I add hardware with the original driver CD inside, then it installs the USB Browser driver, which again does not work)
Any idea?

it seems to me that the pointing device driver provided by DELL (synaptics touchpad) is not good enough... but I am happy to be proved wrong, please give us a solution!
