Vertical line on screen

Hi,

I have a an Inspiron 9300 bought in april 2005.

Since yesterday, my screen shows a very fine yellow vertical line over the entire screen. Extemely annoying. It shows anytime, whatever program I use.

Any thoughts what the cause could be ?

Thx,
Marc.

Attach an external monitor. If the line shows on the external monitor, it is a video card or driver issue.

If it does not, it's a panel problem - hopefully the system is under warranty because the only fix for this fault is a replacement panel, which is expensive.

I have connected to a monitor and the line doesn't show.

So, I guess it's the laptop-screen.

What screen model number do you have?  There are several discussions going in the video section of the inspiron forums.  It looks like there is a pattern.  If we can get enough corroborated part numbers, maybe we can get some sort of recall.  To find out your model number for the screen, log into the dell website, enter your express service code and click on the original system configuration.

This is the purple line of death.  Dell has not yet officially admitted to this problem (as far as I know), but it is widespread and affects several laptops (mine is a 9300).  The symptoms show up at about 18 months then get progressively worse.  For more info see:

(the thread currently goes on for 5 pages)
One hopes Dell will do the right thing and replace defective displays even when out of warranty (since the problem appears to be the result of defective materials, workmanship or design).  A few people have found the right person at Dell or told the right story to get free out of warranty replacement, but so far Dell seems mostly not to care how many customer they will lose by not taking responsibility for selling defective screens (I've been on the phone 4 hours now being routed endlessly to from one department to another or disconnected while waiting on transfer).
