Why Is My Processor Running So Slowly?

I recently bought Halo and Half-Life 2 for my laptop. When both games detected my system specs they said that my processor speed was 1.59GHZ. My processor speed is supposed to be 3.06 GHZ and when I checked my system specs the processor speed was 3.06 GHZ then just after it 1.59GHZ. Does anyone know why I seem to have two processor speeds and why when I paid for a 3.06 GHZ processor it runs at 1.59GHZ? I read an earlier post and the poster seemed to think it was because we had speedstep processors and when the laptop was running off the battery it ran at a different speed. However I was running it off the mains so I don't think that is the cause. Thanks for any help

Yeah, HL2 plays fine on mine, and I play a ton of CSS without issue as well. right-click on the desktop, then select Screen Save (the tab), then select Power. There you can change it from Laptop/Portable to Always On. Or, if that way is too long, you could also click on the little plug in the corner by the clock (left click), then select the power scheme that you want. Hope that helps.

It also says my fan speed is 82800 rpm!!!!!!! Does this program work properly on your laptop???

I downloaded fan GUI and it told me my HD temp (which incidentally was 40) and my CPU load but there was just a line where the CPU speed should be.

that's because you CPU is not needed at full power, so it cuts it down, it will prolong the life of your CPU, but if you set your power scheme to always on, it should always run at 3.06Ghz\

I just downloaded a program which said my internal clock is 1594MHZ. Would this be different to the 'normal' processor speed?

I never have any programs running in the background when I play games especially hl2 as it is so demanding on the graphics card. I'm going to play on css (which works fine surprisingly) and try and knife somebody. he he. I think it's just about sorted as it does say my CPU speed is 3066. Thanks for all your help.

It throws an extra 0 in there. hehe. Go to Options>> Read Options and select to read CPU speed.

I'm not sure, what is your CPU temp according to fanGUI

that shouldn't be an issue. I don't know whats going on, I mean, as long as your CPU is running at full speed, HL2 should run. Make sure you don't have a ton of programs running in the background.

I understand what your saying but why do my games detect that my processor speed is 1.59GHZ rather than 3.06GHZ?

I just did what you told me to do and it said that my current CPU speed is 3066MHZ which it should be but other programs such as WCPUID which i downloaded say my current CPU speed is 1594.68MHZ which it says is its internal clock. Which one do you thinks right?

40 degrees celcius. It hasn't changed in the last 5 minutes which i find a bit surprising. I would have expected it to have changed slightly.

If your using the laptop for gaming, I'd recomend getting the OMEGA drivers from www.omegadrivers.net.  They have definitly made a difference. MUCH better than what nvidia has on their site.

debatable, I have used both. The advantage of the omega is that you can software oc your card which Dell has toned down for heat issues. So when you bring it back up, the heat can come back. Just be careful, they do work though, I mean, it gives me another 10-15 FPS in CSS. So I guess that's an improvment.
