Wifi External Antenna - Longer Range

I'm thinking about adding an external antenna to get longer range and access local hotspots. Has anyone purchased one they like? Did it make a lot of difference?

Also, if you did purchase one, can you give me the details of which one, and any other necessary components needed?

Thanks!

I should have added that I have an Inspiron 6000

The Inspiron 6000 does not have an external jack to plug an external antenna into the internal mini-PCI wireless card. The easiest way to attach an external antenna would be to buy a PCMCIA/Cardbus card with an antenna socket.

I find the internal (inside the screen) antenna in my i6000 to be quite good - far better reception than I ever got using a PCMCIA wireless card (with integrated antenna) in a previous laptop.

ok, thanks I'll check into it. My Internet access is 'free' and I just hop on wirelessly. It's not reliable though (since I don't pay for it).

There is a Starbucks 3 blocks from my house, with a hotspot. Someone told me I might be able to pick it up if I have a longer range antenna.
