Hi,

You might need to update the drivers for your computer compatible with Windows 8. You can update Video drivers and BIOS of your computer. To install the correct drivers, you need to check the graphics card installed on your computer.

To uninstall and re install the drivers:

  • Click on “Start” and right click on “Computer”.
  • Click on “Manage”.
  • Click on “Device Manager”.
  • Under “Display adapters”, you will find the video driver listed.
  • Right click on it and click on “uninstall”. (Check and make a note of the driver installed on your system and re-install the driver from the below steps accordingly).
  • Check the box to delete the software.
  • Restart your system and click on the below link:  http://dell.to/OukFUO
  • Enter the Service Tag of your system and select the operating system.
  • You will find the video driver under “Video”.
  • Click on the video driver depending on the video card your system has. (Install the same video driver which you uninstalled from “Device Manager”.
  • Click on “Download File”.
  • Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
  • Click on “Download Now”.
  • Save the driver on your desktop.
  • Once the driver is saved on desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
  • Install the video driver by following the on screen instructions.
  • Check if the issue is resolved or not.

If the issue still persists, you can update the system BIOS.

Note: Before flashing the BIOS please check the following:-

  • Battery should have 10% or greater charge
  • Adapter should be connected
  • No external devices should be connected.
  • All other programs should be closed and documents saved

You can follow the steps below to update BIOS:

  • Click on the link: http://dell.to/P3GWi1
  • Click on “Download File”.
  • Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
  • Click on “Download Now”.
  • Save the BIOS on your desktop.
  • Once the BIOS is downloaded on the desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
  • Follow the prompts on screen.

Please reply with findings.

Hi,

You can uninstall and then reinstall the video drivers and BIOS as per the steps given above.

If the issue still persists, please let me know the following details:

  1. Does it freeze while running a specific application?
  2. Do you get any error message on screen?
  3. Does it happen while browsing internet?
  4. If there is any external peripheral connected to your computer, you can disconnect it and then try using the computer to see if the issue persists.

You can also run hardware diagnostic on your computer to check if it is an issue with system hardware:

  • Please restart the system.
  • As soon as you see the blue Dell logo, start tapping the ‘F12’ key.

Note: If you wait too long and the Microsoft Windows appears, then continue to wait until you see the Windows desktop. Now shutdown your computer and try again.

  • After you tap ‘F12’ key, a new window would appear in front of you. Use the 'Down' arrow key to highlight the option “Diagnostics”

Note: (If Boot to the Utility partition option is not there then you will have a “Diagnostics” option to select which starts the diagnostics directly.)

  • When you get a prompt 'Were color bars displayed?’. Press 'Y' in case the color bars are displayed else press 'N'.
  • Continue running the test till you get a message: No errors found so far. Would you like to continue the remaining memory steps? It might take more than 30 minutes. Press 'N' and restart the computer.
  • Make a note of error code if any.

Please reply with findings.

Hi,

You can try using your computer in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and see if the issue still persists.

Steps to access ‘Safe mode with Networking’:

To boot the system in safe mode with networking on Windows 8

Press the Win+R key combination and type msconfig in the run box and hit enter.

Switch over to the boot tab, and click on the Safe Boot check box.

You also need to choose the type of Safe Boot option as "Network"

The Active Directory option pertains to restoring a server that is a Domain Controller for your network. Once you have chosen your option click the ok button and restart your machine.

You PC will be booted into Safe Mode automatically.

If you restart you PC you will just keep getting booted into Safe Mode, to stop this open msconfig again and uncheck the Safe Boot option, then hit the ok button. Check if the issue persists there.

Another step you can try is to disable the wireless of your computer and connect your computer to Internet with wired connection (Ethernet) and see if it exhibits the same behavior.

Please reply with findings

Hi,

Could you please check and let me know the wireless card installed on your computer.

You can check that under 'Network Adapters' from 'Device Manager':

  • Click on “Start” and right click on “Computer”.
  • Click on “Manage”.
  • Click on “Device Manager”.
  • Under “Network adapters”, you will find the wireless driver listed.
  • Make a note of that.

Another step that you can try is to use your computer with wired connection 'Ethernet' and then see if it makes any difference.

Please share the findings.
