Windows Server 2003, how to install audio driver
Dell notebooks with Windows Server 2003 operating system use XP audio drivers:
1. Enable Windows Audio Service. (This should already be enabled in 2003 Standard Edition). For other versions:
Go to Start/Run and type "services.msc" then hit the 'Enter' key (or click 'ok'). The Services window will appear. Scroll down until you find "Windows Audio" towards the bottom of the list. Double click on it and change the Startup type to Automatic, then click Start, Apply, and OK.
2. Download and install the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 KB901105 update from this Microsoft page:
link
3. Restart.
4. Install the Sigmatel audio driver for Windows XP. To find it for your model use the "Drivers and Downloads" link on the left of this page, toward the bottom. If you still have trouble installing it use WinXP compatibility mode.
5. Adjust DirectX hardware acceleration:
Click on Start/Run and type "dxdiag" then hit the 'Enter' key (or click 'ok') . Go to the Sound tab and move the slider on "Hardware Sound Acceleration Level" to Full Acceleration.
