If it's out of warranty, start shopping for a replacement notebook. The mainboard needs to be replaced, which will run you $500 or so; it's not worth the cost to repair a budget notebook such as this one.
i have the same problem with my laptop. You can fix it or have someone else fix it for you by relsoldering the connection but to do so you have to completely take it apart and if you can use an iron and if the connection isn't broke it can be soldered on and work good as new I've had to do it to mine 4 time cause it was dropped or jammed on the end of the cord its a fault in the laptop it has nothing to prevent it from damage and is held on by 6 little solder tabs a good push can loosen it
beware taking the laptop apart and getting it together again can be a job and it has to be done right for it to work again hope it helps i do this repair for people for 100.00$ still cheaper then buying it new
I have a similar problem with my laptop, an Inspirion 9100.
I was using it today and without any warning it shut off completely, as if the power cord had been unplugged (I normally use it without the battery in). At first I thought the power cord might have become loose, but it was firmly in the computer. I unplugged it and plugged it back in. When I tried to to turn it on, the green power light came on for about three seconds, then the computer shut off again. Nothing came on the screen.
Thinking it might be a problem with the power adapter, I put in the battery in but the same thing happened. I also heard a faint "popping" sound after it shut off, as if the computer was trying to connect to the power source or something. I have no idea what is going on. Is there any hope that this can be fixed or should I give up and get a new laptop?? Please help!
i have that same exact problem with my 9100. it just started doing it last night. i have the battery in it and its connected with the ac power adapter. it turns off all my itself and when i turn it back on, it turns off within 3 seconds. sometimes the battery light blinks orange, but i don't know why because all the batteries are charged.
I have a similar problem with my I8600 as well! Tried to turn it on, but nothing shows up on screen -- only power light stays on for few seconds.
After talking to the Dell support, they have advised that I should remove the following items to see if they are at fault.
here's the current status:
Removed the following:
1. battery (running on AC)
2. DVD-CDRW
3. memory (2 DIMMs of 512MB each): I have removed one DIMM and left the original one in DIMM A, I have also tried to put the other memory in DIMM A as well.
After removing the above mentioned components, I was still unable to power my Inspirion 8600. Currently, only the power light stays on for approximately 3-4 seconds and nothing happens.
What do you think the problem might be, based on what I have done? Motherboard? CPU? Memory?
Any help the forum members can provide would be greatly appreciated!
