XP Does Not Detect & Configure USB Mass Storage Device

Windows XP Does Not Detect and Configure a Removable USB Mass Storage Device. I am trying to attach a USB 30GB external USB drive - but XP does not detect the drive. ALL other USB devices (mouse, memory stick, etc) are working 100%.

My Latitude D500 also having the same problem, seems that the Dell latitude D500 is not 'comply to USB2' standard, as it does not drive an external storage (<0.5A) usign a single USB cable.

Hope they has a driver or bios fix and able to share with us.

Insipron 600m does not has such issue.

Hi

So If connected to USB Port is the Device Recognized by WinXP but only not seen in "My Computer" or doesn't even a message occure. Mass Storage Device found ?

If it's not seen in the "My Computer" that you have to install the drive via the Computermanagement -> StorageDevices -> there you do a right klick on the usb drive and klick on "install" Afterwards the drive can be formated and used.

But if it's not recognized by WinXP at all than see if you've got the latest Bios Updates and newest Chipset Driver is installed. If it's still not recognized than maybe the power thats needed from the USB HDD is higher than 500map you will have to use kind of external power source beetwen usb hdd and Notebook. Something like an usb-hub with additional power supply.

Thats

it.
