XPS 14..... Gone?

Question

I've been shopping for a Performance 14' laptop with Widi and the ability to be a powerful video editor (and run for long periods with the battery, so the Optimus i5 combination seemed like a great choice). I did not want to pack around a 15 or 17 ' beast so as I considered the specs the XPS 14 looked liked my best bet. NOW ITS NO LONGER AVAILIBLE ? Is this product permanently discontinued? Is it to be upgraded and replaced. Sucks when Dell makes these changes and does not provide an alternative.

It is likely due to be replaced - and it's further likely the problem is with the flaw Intel found in the new Sandy Bridge chipsets, which is being fixed, but will result in delays for replacement systems from every manufacturer.

Not sure if the Sandy Bridge chipset was used on the XPS 14 but that sort of an issue would make sense. Hope to see something 'good' in the way of replacement in the next few weeks.

I was in a debate between apple mac pro 13 and dell xps 14 - was just about set on the dell when poof - it was gone. I really want something light with long battery life.

It will likely wait for Intel to release a corrected Sandy Bridge chipset - that target is for May.

ok thanks! What exactly was wrong with the Sandy Bridge chipset from the Dell XPS 14 though? I'm thinking of purchasing a used one from a friend... Thanks again!

Sandy Bridge never came to the XPS line - not yet anyway. Only a couple of Alienware systems were shipped with it. The problem has to do with the SATA controller - and it'll take a while for Intel to release chipsets without the flaw, which will no doubt delay the replacement of the XPS 14, which was further no doubt in the works once the Sandy Bridge platform was announced.

Intel apparently revised its replacement schedule as well.

did some research and turns out I read your reply incorrectly...

The SATA flaw is then only with intel's series 6 sandy-bridge chipsets. I understand then that if dell wants to release a replacement of the XPS 14 using Intel's new chipsets, it should indeed wait for Intel to fix this flaw.

However, what I would like to know is what was so wrong with the XPS 14 that it got pulled? (since it did not have a sandy-bridge chip) And what might be my usability limitations should I buy a used one?

Did you even bother to read my reply? NO XPS SYSTEMS have used Sandy Bridge at all. The issue is that the REPLACEMENT models for the XPS series WILL use this - and that is likely the reason for the delay in their arriving.

No used notebook is a good buy in any way, shape or form unless you get a transferrable warranty with it.

So is this SATA controller problem major? Meaning I will have major problems down the road using my laptop should I opt for a used XPS 14? What might these limitations be? Why was the problem exclusive to the XPS 14 and not to the 15 and 17 versions as well?
